Resistance Towards Violence Against Women

As many as 39 crimes against women were reported every hour in India, up from 21 in 2007, according to crime in India 2016 report by the National Crime Records Bureau. The Union Territory of Delhi reported the highest crime rate 160.4 against the national average of 55.2. Delhi was followed by Assam, Odisha, Telangana, and Rajasthan. Uttar Pradesh India's most populous state- reported the most crimes against women. Four rape cases reported every hour in 2016. Of rape victims in 2016 43% were girls below 18years.

Reasons are likely:

The first reason for increasing this crime is the lowest conviction rate for crime against women. "Greater reporting and a dismissal conviction rate spells disaster for women"
The rate of increased illiteracy is also the main reason for crime increasing. Although our government provides free and compulsory education to the age of 6 to 14 years for but free education no one seeks their positive attention. This policy does not work so good.
Last but not least we are living in that type of society in which everyone is under fear of stigma. A number of women against whom crimes can be committed by this alone reason they did not come forward for reporting. They are under the fear that stigma and shame can spoil their life and future.

Remedial measures by citizens

We keep on blaming the government for not doing enough but are we doing enough as citizens?
We further add to the suffering of the victims by maintaining the stigma around all kinds of crime against women.
There is such a hush about the crime as if it were something shameful when it isn't. Even the name of the victim is kept confidential due to societal shaming. This isn't something shameful, it is atrocious. There is very less awareness especially in comparison to the crime rate. Unawareness about the incident firstly; no one wants to know more about what happened because we don't want to feel upset. We don't talk about it with our family members so that the conversation does not become awkward or unpleasant. The power lies in the frequency, more the crime, more the awareness and more the resistance.
We act in fear and not in resistance. When we hear on the news about women crimes then instinctively we fear for our daughters, sisters and other female family members and go onto be more protective and restrictive. What approach is actually beneficial is when we empower our girls and train our boys simultaneously to an equal extent. Empowerment means supporting them to go out in the world, pursue ambitions, socialize, take care of their own bank accounts and investments, participate in the stock market and more fundamentally allow them to stay out after dark, travel in public transport, travel to places and have fun just like our boys. It may seem like you’re the only one doing this in the beginning and the risks are so high but this is the surest way to create a safer society for them.

In the civil services, understanding of this issue is crucial because finding solutions to such contemporary social evils is required. Here at Gurmarg, a premier IAS coaching institute of Chandigarh, we build aware, responsible and competent contenders.
