LIFE IN PLASTIC
As a major producer of
Plastic waste that ends up in oceans, India is arguably the best place to host
the “ World Environment Day” 5th
June and the UN theme “ Beat Plastic
Pollution” will not remain an empty slogan as said by our Union Minister.
India has taken its own rules on Waste Management seriously.
Centre’s liberal
estimate shows over 60% of about 25,000 tonnes of plastic waste generated daily
is collected.
As the Ganga –
Brahmaputra – Meghna River System is on UN map of 10 rivers that carry the bulk
waste into the oceans.
Their effects are
evident. They threaten marine life & well living of people, as
Microplastics are found even in drinking water.
Indian Initiatives-: Communities and Environment governments and Municipal authorities . They
segregate waste at grass root level and conduct “ plastic free” events
socially.
Centre’s Environment ( Protection ) Act is implemented in
letter and spirit .
The Provision of Plastic Waste Management Rules require
manufactures of compostable bags to get certificate from Central Pollution Control Board.
Gurmarg’s
vision - : Ideally regulation should help stop the manufacture of single use
plastic article such as carry bags, Cutlery and encourage the use of
Biodegradable materials.
Assertions on plastic
pollution alone will not inspire confidence.
India and World face a
plastic crisis, solving it will take more than slogans.
