Geography through travel
Geography constitutes an essential part
of the curriculum of the IAS exams and other competitive exams. World Geography
and Indian Geography can be quite a vast syllabus to cover. It is even more
tedious if one tries to memorize it. To think about it, Geography isn't concept
based and cannot even be understood. Various landforms of the world can only be
known. Some physical and political boundaries need to be studied all across the
globe. Then what is the method that can be adopted to master the subject?
One innovative method is studying it
through travel. There I something refreshing and reviving in this approach.
When you think about a random place in the world and view it as a travel
destination then your interest is enhanced
by a lot. Travel includes heritage, culture, food, and demography. These
particular topics are the ones in the geography curriculum also. Studying
various geographical phenomena with a practical approach rather than a
theoretic one can enhance your interest in the subject as well. For instance,
let's talk about the great barrier reef. The natural coral reef is the world's
largest and most diverse. It is adorned with an abundance of marine life. To
think of the 3000 individual reef systems and coral cays visually is
fascinating but if you try to memorize it as only words then it sounds strange
and burdensome. Once you perceive it as a place you want to visit and not an
academic hurdle then it becomes so much easier to retain it in your mind.
Study can be interesting and effective
with the innovative and curiosity stimulating methods. Try it once if you don’t
believe me.
